How to prove your immigration status to an employer

Do you need a share code for your NI application or has your employer asked you for one? Here is a step by step guide to help you generate one.

What is a share code?

The share code generator is a relatively new process that the UK Government has introduced to enable you to prove your status to other people, most commonly your employer or your Natioinal Insurance application.

Who is able to generate a share code?

You will be able to get a code if you have settled or pre-settled status or you applied for a visa and used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to provide copies of your identity documents.

What documents do you need to generate a share code?

Before you start you will need to have ready.

  • The ID document you used when you applied for the settled or pre-settled status / visa and (eg passport, national identity card, or biometric residence card )
  • Your DOB and the mobile number and/or email address as you’ll be sent a code for logging in

Make sure you provide a mobile number or e-mail that is immediately accessible to you so you can receive the code.

How long is it valid for?

Once you generate a share code it is valid for 30 days. if it expires you can just reapply for another. There is no limit on the number of times you apply for a code.
