Worried about moving to the UK? So you should be!

Moving to the UK for the first time? Worried about what lies ahead? Are you beginning to doubt your decision? Whether you're heading here solo or with friends, it's understandable that you're going to feel anxious....

Ask anyone how they feel about their decision to move overseas and the most likely response is “nervous” My reply to this is always 'good'! Good, because being nervous is actually a positive thing. It shows you’re doing something of consequence and that it matters to you.

It’s easy to think that being nervous is a bad sign but have you considered that you only ever feel this way in situations where you want to succeed? Think about it, can you recall a time when you were nervous about something you didn’t care about? Unlikely! So by being nervous it is showing that you want your move over to the UK to be successful.

Being nervous about moving to the UK also shows that you’ve recognised that the journey ahead is going to be challenging. Anyone who is not even a little nervous about relocating overseas has failed to grasp the enormity of what lies ahead! No-one should embark on an adventure of this scale with the expectation that moving over here is going to be a walk in the park. You are not coming over here on a two-week jolly!

You are uprooting your life for the best part of two years (or however long). This is going to test everything you know about yourself and then some! But these challenges, however testing, are essential because they will give you an opportunity to grow in ways you didn't even know that you needed to. They will help you to become a better version of yourself. As the quote says, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”

So, just keep telling yourself that you are going to do just fine! And you know what? You will. I can certainly tell you without any uncertainty that you are going to have the most incredible, life changing experience. You are about to enjoy a stage of your life, some say a rite of passage, that you will remember (and feel nostalgic about) for the rest of your life. You definitely won’t want it to end!

Many people around you are going to wish they were you! Perhaps you might be the first in your family or friends to do this, your stories and achievements may one day, inspire them to follow in your footsteps. So, yes, be worried, be nervous, be exited, feel overwhelmed, feel daunted, because once you're here, you'll feel so glad you did it.
